When Both Roofs Were Ripped off Brick House 319

I was just looking through photos before the new addition was built and came across this one which I don’t believe I posted on my blog (maybe I did but not totally sure).

When I look at it, I think of Pharrell Williams ‘Happy’ lyrics: “Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.” Well, the roof was off the house for about two weeks before the new construction began.

I definitely wasn’t happy about having a room without a roof–not for that amount of time. The house was wide open.

If I ever have Pharrell on one of my flights, maybe I’ll ask him why anyone would be happy with a room without a roof?

Time was not on our side….the entire spring and summer was nothing but a series of roadblocks  for us.

And then John ripped off the second roof and built a new one. It had to be done because the roof was in terrible shape.

The one good thing about ripping off both roofs was getting rid of the bats. They had nowhere to hang their hat upside down and had to find another place to make their baby bats cozy for their hibernation period. They are gone! And I’ll never forget that creepy sound they make.

This has really been one big ball of fun!

Installing High Hats in the Master Bedroom Wing

Today, we finished installing the 4″ HALO high hats in the master bedroom wing (new addition). We had to actually go out and buy two more boxes of high hats (six to a box). Each high hat cost about $19.00. By installing recessed lighting, we’re adding additional value to the house.

The photo above is the hallway leading to the walk-in closet and master bedroom.

The large walk-in closet and master bath is to the right.

John installed 6 high hats in the master bedroom, 3 in the closet and 3 in the master bath (a fan/light will be installed in the water closet). He learned how to do basic electrical wiring when he worked for a builder over 15 years ago.

All the recessed lighting will have dimmer switches and every room will be wired for a fan.

Today, my blog spiked and got 23,000 hits (as a result of www.countryliving.com). I get a major spike about once or twice a month and it’s always a real treat. Thanks for visiting my blog!

Recessed Lighting: High Hat Installation Throughout House

Lighting design is actually fun. Installing HALO high hats is relatively easy.

First, we marked with a red magic marker where we wanted to install high hats. Given the layout of each room, we popped lines to establish distance from the top plate.

On Thanksgiving, and all weekend, John and I designed recessed lighting throughout the house. Dale, the electrician, also stopped by the day after Thanksgiving.

John and Dale went room to room marking where the home run from the 200amp service will run into each specific room (each room on the panel will have a separate circuit).

John has a 1000ft roll of 14/2 electrical wire on a spool/roller (which he made) sitting in the garage. He’ll pull the wire from the spool into each room. When the wire comes into the room, he’ll pull enough of it to hook up all high hats, switches and outlets.

For all bathrooms and the dining area, the wire will be 12/2 by code. Dining rooms require 12/2 due to the fact that many people have appliances in dining rooms (microwave, hot plate, toaster, etc).

Today, John and I are finishing up the high hat installation. The entire house will have 4″ HALO high hats; the only area with 6″ high hats is in the 20ft vaulted living room ceiling. The HALO hats purchased allow for insulation (IC-rated, for direct contact with insulation and Air-Tight).
