Kitchen: Taping

Now that all the drywall is installed, John started taping the kitchen last week. He already had FibaTape self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape which he has used in the past. And on another run to the store, he bought more.

This tape is easy to apply and increases joint strength. (I like the color too, not that it matters.)

The tape looks pretty on all the ceiling joints. It’s nice to see a temporary pop of color. It sort of screams “You’re getting one step closer to having a finished kitchen.”

It’s really going to be amazing when all the high hats light up the kitchen with a flick of a switch (on a dimmer). One day, the work lamp on the right, which appears in so many photos, will retire.

Next year, I plan to have a kitchen garden steps from the French doors. To the left, we’ll have a great view of the patio (and my present garden) while sitting in the box bay window.

John purchased PLUS 3 joint compound and got his spackle knives (tape knives) ready in various sizes.

Down the road, French doors will be installed at the opening leading to the dining/living room area.

This is the east wall where the Maytag appliances will be installed. The refrigerator is on the far right covered in a tarp. And there’s that lamp again!

Standing in the dining room looking at the kitchen. I’m looking forward to the day when a kitchen sink and cabinets are installed underneath the window.

  1. Do you guys have any idea when you can move in? Are you going to wait until everything is finished? I’ve read your blog from the beginning and have enjoyed every step of the way, from your creativeness to John’s doggedness to do the job right. It’s fascinating to me to watch this process by people who work so hard to do the job correctly.

  2. Yay! The kitchen is my favorite room in the house. (I’m a personal chef) It is so welcoming and I love the french doors going outside and the idea of the ones dividing the kitchen from the dining room. It is looking lovely, and I like the blue too. A nice break from all the white! You’ll be cooking and eating there soon! You two are continuing to do a great job.
